Local US substitutes that work in a pinch: bratwurst is a workable wors stand-in if you can grab it from a Wisconsin butcher. Coriander seed at any grocer + good beef sausage casings = homemade wors that's 80% there.

What does an expat braai actually cost?
Here's a same-shopping-list comparison for 8 guests, in local currency. It is the same full basket as the 2026 cost article: wors, rump, chicken, pap, smoor, both salads, rolls, beer, Coke, brandy and sparkling water. The Checkers column is an estimate from the 24 September 2026 check. The UK and Australia columns are estimates from the 25 September 2026 check, except Tesco 2L Coke and Woolworths Australia sparkling water, which are older estimates. The USA column is an older estimate from the latest check on file, not a till slip.

The biggest cost driver overseas is always the imported wors. Local substitutes (good butcher sausages with coriander rubbed in) can bring that down 30-40%.
Tips for first-time SA expat braais
- Order ahead. Most SA shops ship in 3-5 days; major holidays (December, Heritage Day) sell out a week early.
- Buy in bulk & freeze. Boerewors freezes brilliantly. A 5kg bulk order halves the per-kg cost on shipping.
- Mealie meel is fine via Amazon US/UK. Iwisa-equivalent maize meal is available everywhere now.
- Mrs Ball's chutney is at most international supermarkets in the "world foods" aisle. You don't need an SA shop for it.
- Charcoal & equipment, gas BBQs are king in the US/UK/AU. Use lump charcoal in a kettle braai for the closest taste.
